I chose to get tested, knowing the risk of inheriting my mother’s cancer-causing gene. For me, it was better to know rather than live in uncertainty. When I found out that I do carry this gene, I didn’t panic. Of course, my risk of developing cancer is higher, but that doesn’t mean it will necessarily happen. I just need to follow the screening recommendations. This diagnosis is not a death sentence, and certainly not the end of my world.
