Yasmine
45 yo, BRCA 2

Just before my 40th birthday, I discovered that I was a carrier of the BRCA2 genetic mutation.

The research was carried out thanks to my gynecologist, who insisted that my mom have a genetic test because my great-grandmother, grandmother and mother all had breast cancer.

When the geneticist told me that I was a BRCA2 carrier, it was very clear to me that I was going to have a preventive mastectomy to remove this sword of Damocles. It was clear, but also quite frightening because I was heading into the unknown and I didn’t know anyone in my situation.

I was therefore operated on in March 2021, at the age of 41, on my right breast for a mastectomy and immediate reconstruction by pap-flap (taking a flap from my right thigh) and in September 2021 for the same operation but on my left breast (and left thigh) this time.  During the biopsy of the left breast, cancerous sites were discovered.

So I went from prevention to cure.

At the beginning of 2024, I underwent an adnexectomy to prevent ovarian cancer.

By getting involved with the BRCA Network, I hope to be able, at my humble level, to provide support and a sympathetic ear to all those who are starting the prevention process. I know that people can be confused and stressed (I have been) at the thought of taking the plunge.  I believe in sisterhood.
